I like how your face in the comic always matches what you write perfectly.

I went to an art show on Friday and had similar reaction but usually I just feel guilty that what I usually end up being most interested in is whatever's closest to comics ... haha

Haha, yeah. I mean, I went to the Masters of American Comic Art in Milwaukee over the summer, but that was Windsor McCay, Schultz, Caniff... so I think comics can have a place in art shows, but otherwise, I'm not so sure. At least, for me, it's not my thing.

There was an art show in Toronto this weekend showing art from He-Man and She-Ra. I really wanted to go. Ah well.

I'd go to an art show of your stuff. You could have little notebooks for people to browse through.

haha, that's cool, you should have gone.

Thanks, if it was that kind of gallery experience, that would be cool. But, I mean, staring at individual pages, aside from admiring the arttttt, i dunno.

Chris Ware had all his pages from Jimmy Corrigan at the Musem of Contemporary Art over the summer, and I made an effort to read everything, so maybe i'm wrong with this view.

Hahhaha, I know what piece of art you're referring to in the art gallery. I had the same reaction to it. And I know the house gallery as well, and I've felt the same way. Just more of a "I don't fit in with this crowd" kind of feeling.

The Comics Journal # 241

Hey Andrew, you should really track down a copy of The Comics Journal #241 with John Porcellino. He talks all about being a painting major in college and deciding about half way through that Comics were such a better way to connect with people. It's one of the most inspirational things I've ever read and part of the reason that I'm totally obsessed with his work right now (John is totally my self-publishing role model at this point). It's got all kinds of other great insights into making Comics and self-publishing as well. Track it down if you can! Seriously! I think it would hit you like a ton of bricks (in a good way)

That sounds amazing, thank you, Alec. John Porcellino is such a big influence for me; when i picked up Perfect Example over the summer, it changed everything for me, and is really what caused my comics to change through the fall.

I'd really like to find that issue, I'll certainly keep an eye out for it.

I actually go to the same school from which he got his painting major... and the town in which he lived for a long time afterward. It's possible that if he lived in the art dorms, I live in the same building he did! His stories take place just towns over from my own, so he always hits home for me.

WHOA!!! Then you ***HAVE*** to find this issue! Because it's got a long part all about his painting teacher (who might be YOUR painting teacher???) and this crazy final project he did. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll type out the main part I want you to read... but not tonight! (Homework is killing me...)

this is interesting to me because my big project at the moment is a big cartoon piece designed for an end-of-semester art show. hanging up comix panels in the middle of everyone else's "fine art" pieces is gonna be an interesting experience.

and less related, i applaud you for drawing convincingly crossed arms in the first panel.

Oooh, well that sounds cool, i hope it works out. I'd like to think comics on display next to single images can draw people in, and make them focus a little more.

and, ha, thanks, it was a little tough to get down.

ironically, i'm trying to convince steve to start making comics because his paintings are really paintings, they're more like single colors frames from a comic that could be much more affecting if they weren't solo.

however he's sort of pretentious and won't listen to me.

regardless, i sort of have become utterly disilliusioned with the few gallery shows i've been to. they're so sterile and i always feel awkward and it seems like everybody is trying to be as pretentious as possible. i'm going to attempt to reform them somehow, make them crazy and lively and above all else, LOUD and EMOTIONAL. of course, i haven't figured out how to do this yet.

but if i set something up somewhere, i'd like you to have an opening with your comics, a constant loops of explosions going in the background, and a very loud soundtrack that's been chosen by you playing all night.

hmmm, yeah, i saw that he uses outlines and stuff. if he could get a grasp on story telling, and stay away from just making "sequential illustrations", he could probably pull it up.

I think you should turn things around, Mike. Gumby Haus is already huge, it's just a matter of time before it's a gallery.

and haha, that would be amazing, i'd be honored. though, i may lose my anonymity amongst the party crowd, aside from being one of the "bike guys".

Mhm, though I'm pretty selfdefeating when it comes to my school stuff, I am optimistic about it, as a whole.

It is pretty interesting, I have to say. University life overall is pretty nice, and I'm glad I've been here.

art shows always make me feel inadequate, at least college art shows. even if the work sucks, people somehow pretend to have have something you lack. the best part is that everyone there buys into it. maybe i dislike the people who go to galleries rather than the ones who show stuff in them.

its nice that youre honest about yourself and your work. i think that counts a lot.

yeah, something about everything being on display, the environment, it's intimidating. I mean, i enjoy going to other people's shows, but it's not something i aspire to.

I just wanted to let you know that this was the exact same way I felt as a college freshman.

I'm not going to tell you to change your major or anything, but unless your school has a good illustration program or that's something you could see yourself doing, you might not be happy as an art major in the future. I mean, I remember doing a lot of asinine things that I didn't feel were enriching me in any way and certainly weren't helping me learn the pacing of comic book panels or how to do layouts or anything.

At the moment, I'm an art major because it's what I know, and it helps to learn composition, anatomy, etc... but, i don't want to find a job with it. I don't want to be an illustrator, graphic designer, etc... if i were to get a job with art, i couldn't complain though, because when it came down to it, i'd be paid for drawing, and i could never deny my kid self's dreams.

we'll see, though. i may just go to japan and major in manga.

This comic is similar to my own point of view. I've stopped trying to argue that comics can be Art, because I've decided I don't actually like Art; I like comics. I've never seen any painting or sculpture that resonates with me like a well-inked or written or laid-out comic page. But I still go to exhibition openings and such as much as I can (mainly for the free wine). And even though it's rare that I see anything that I really like (even after consuming the free wine), I find going an interesting experience. I've never had to worry about feeling like I don't belong. I guess it might be different if I was studying in the field.

mhm. i think comics are cetainly art, it'll just take a while before the rest catch up. i still enjoy going to art shows, learning, practicing 'fine arts'... but my love has certainly been shaken.
